Visual Art Creativity.

Summer is almost here and it’s time to signup for Encore Kids! activities with our summer Artist-in-Residence, Rachel Oliver. Free weekly sessions begin Tuesday, June 11, 10am-noon for kids who have finished 1st through 3rd grades. Sessions for kids who have finished 4th through 6th grades will begin Thursday, June 13, 1:00-3:00pm. All sessions will begin at the Mt. Morris Library Conference Room. Parents will be told upon drop off if the group will be moving to the outdoor campus area or the Senior Center for food preparation (both within a block’s walking distance). If so, kids will return to the Library for pickup. Due to rain and wind, many of the art sessions will be held at the Library.
Preregistration can be completed at the Village Hall (M-F, 8-4:30pm), or online
click here to register, or in person with Rachel a week in advance. To help with planning enough art supplies (or food ingredients), preregistration is preferred at least several days in advance.
All Encore Kids will be making a “Summer Voyage” across many nations and their creative arts (and sometimes foods!). June countries will include France (June 11 & 13), Japan (June 18 & 20), and South Africa (June 25 & 27). No regular Encore Kids on July 2 or 4 or the week of July 16, due to Vacation Bible School being that week. July countries in the Summer Voyage will be Russia (July 9 & 11), Chile (July 23 & 25), and the state of Alaska (July 30 and August 1). End of season art-oriented parties are planned for August 6 and 8. Be watching for a schedule of activities for older students and adults during July. For example, Tuesday, July 2 will be a free plein air painting/drawing session on the Mt. Morris Campus from 9-noon, open to kids and adults of all ages. See encoremtmorris.com for more details.

Encore! Mt. Morris is launching a new program this summer, an artist-in-residence (AiR). What is that, you say? An AiR is a practicing artist or college-level art student who can inspire the artist in all of us through art experiences of all kinds! Our AiR for 2018, Brittney Meyer, Brit grew up in Forreston and graduated with a college degree in education, taught school a few years in Hawaii, and has returned to the main land to earn a second degree in art to pursue a career where art education is a focus. Part of that goal is developing a summer’s worth of art experiences for all ages in Mt. Morris: children, adults and seniors!
Brittney and Encore have loads of ideas of what those art experiences might be, but would love to hear your ideas too! A few to start in June will be (1) a weekly art program for K-3
rd graders and 4-6th graders, (2) a community straw sculpture building project to promote our US National Straw Sculpting Competition in August (the community build will be happening on highway 64 behind the Union Savings Bank), (3) the art gallery shows (See her own art displayed in the foyer of the gallery soon), and (4) the Color Me a Memory and the Village activities program at Pinecrest. We will be publishing many of her activities and how we can all get involved in the area papers, you can also check the community display board in front of the Mt. Morris Bandshell where each week’s activities will be posted, along with photos of what has been happening recently. You can also check our encoremtmorris.com web site for additional information. Brit can be reached at britm@encoremtmorris.com beginning June 1. She will be with us until August 10.
The historic Mt. Morris College campus contains the oldest building in Mt. Morris, a beautifully preserved sandstone building used for science classes at the College and later converted to Watt Publishing Company. Encore! Mt. Morris has been able to acquire the use of the first floor as a multi-purpose art gallery space. Refurbished, painted and equipped during the summer of 2016 for art displays by volunteers, it has served as the anchor space for Encore! Mt. Morris to host numerous shows.

Regular shows are scheduled throughout the summer months, during the December holiday season, and less frequently at other times during the school year. The gallery is open during the summer Jamboree music concert series (Friday evenings) and Kable Band concerts (Wednesday evenings) and during other community events and festivals, as publicized.
